How to install and create new users for Gene6 FTP Server:

Step 1. After Double Clicking on the executable program, choose
the language of the installation you want, then click OK.



Step 2. On this next screen, click next.



Step 3. Choose "I accept the agreement", and click next.



Step 4. After reviewing the information screen, click next.



Step 5. Choose the directory that you want to install the
FTP Server to, and click next.



Step 6. Leave the checkmarks on all the components that the
installer is showing you, and click next.



Step 7. Click next on the "Select Start Menu Folder" screen.



Step 8. Click next on the "Remote Administration" screen.

Step 9. Enter your password for the administrator account, then click next.

Step 10. Click next on the "Select Additional Tasks" screen.



Step 11. Click install on the "Ready to Install" screen.



Step 12. On the "Completing the Gene6 FTP Server Setup Wizard"
screen, Leave the
checkmarks on all the actions that the
installer is showing you, and click Finish.



Step 13. You should now be seeing the "Gene6 FTP Server Administrator"
screen. If after any action that you take, if you see the
trial version nag screen, then just click ok.

Step 14. Click on where it says, "Local Machine", on the left side of the screen,
then enter your administrator password.

If after any action that you take, if you see the
trial version nag screen, then just click ok.

Step 15. Click on where it says, "Local Machine" to expose the
"domains" option and double click on the "domains".
If after any action that you take, if you see the
trial version nag screen, then just click ok.

Step 16. Double click on where it says, "Double click here to add
a
domain".



Step 17. You should now be seeing the "Domain wizard" screen. Under
"Enter the name of the new domain", put your desired domain name or
enter your OUTSIDE IP ADDRESS (You can find out what it is by going
to http://www.whatismyip.com).If you are running a webserver and
DNS server, you cannot put the name of your FTP server, for example,
"ftp.yoursite.com", you still have to enter your OUTSIDE IP ADDRESS. If you have
a dynamic IP address and are using a dynamic IP service such as
"no-ip.com", you can enter your dynamic DNS server website address
(You can get one at no-ip.com) for example, "yourname.no-ip.org", or
"yourname.dyndns.org". After you are finished with the "Domain wizard"
screen, click next.



Step 18. On this screen, you can choose the port that you want to
run your FTP site on. The standard port for FTP is port 21. Many ISP's
block FXPing from port 21, so if you want to be on the safe side, then
run your FTP site on a non standard port. You then redirect the non standard port.
instead of the FTP standard port of 21 on your router,
if you are using one. To do this, click the box where it says, "Port"
and enter the port number that you want to run your FTP site on. After
you are finished selecting the port that you want to run your FTP site
on, click next.

Avoid using ports between 1024 to 4999.



Step 19. On the next screen which gives you choices about the logs
on your FTP site, click next.



Step 20. The next screen gives you a choice about whether or not
you want to create an
anonymous account on your FTP site. If you
wish for people to have anonymous access to your FTP site, then
here is how you do it. First, you have to give the anonymous users a
home directory. Click on the little folder picture with the magnifying
glass on it, which is located to the right of the box which says,
"home".



Step 21. You should now see the "Select anonymous home directory"
screen. Here you choose the home directory. for the anonymous users.
Double click on the drive letter that you want the anonymous home directory to be in.



Step 22. On the next screen, or wherever you want the
anonymous home directory to be in, highlight your choice and then click on the
"open" button. In this example, we will be using "c:\ anonymous".

Step 23. The next screen confirms your choice for the home directory
of the anonymous users. Click on "Finish", to create the account
for the anonymous users.



Step 24. Now you must configure the PASV mode, (Passive Mode)
for your FTP site. From the "Domain settings" screen, (where you should
be at this point), click on where it says, "IP binding".



Step 25. You should now be seeing the "IP binding" tab. Under
"Redirect PASV IP", put your desired domain name or enter your
OUTSIDE IP ADDRESS (You can find out what it is by going to
http://www.whatismyip.com).If you are running a webserver and
DNS server, you cannot put the name of your FTP server, for example,
"ftp.yoursite.com", you still have to enter your OUTSIDE IP ADDRESS.
If you have a dynamic IP and are using
a dynamic IP service such as "no-ip.com", you can enter your
dynamic DNS server website address (You can get one at no-ip.com) for example,
"yourname.no-ip.org", or "yourname.dyndns.org".

Step 26. On the bottom, under "Passive Port Range", enter 50000 on the
left window, and 50100 on the right window, and click OK.



Step 27. At this point, your FTP site should be up and running.
To create another user, here is what you do. First, double click on
your domain on the right hand side of the screen, not where the tree structure
is on the left side.



Step 28. Then double click on where it says, "Users".



Step 29. Right click on the right part of the screen, and left click
on "New user", on the small window that pops up.



Step 30. On the next screen, choose your desired username and
password for your user. In this example, we will choose the username,
"testuser" and the password "testuser". When you finish choosing
the username and password, click next.



Step 31. Choose the home directory for the new user. The process
for selecting a home directory for a new user is the same for
selecting a home directory for an anonymous user. Follow steps
10 to 23.

The complete process of creating new users is described on step 34.

Step 32. When you create a new user, you need to give that user
access rights. To do this, first, from this screen, click on
"Access Rights."

Step 33. Click on the "virtual path" to highlight it and to bring up
the access rights. After you select the checkmarks on which access rights
you want for your new user, click ok.


How to create users for Gene6 FTP Server:

We will now create an upload account and a download account, and set the correct
permissions for each account.

Step 34.

From the Gene6 FTP Server administrator program,
expand the
tree structure on the left side to expose the "users"
option and highlight it.

Step 35.

Right click on the right part of the screen, and left click
on "New user", on the small window that pops up.

Step 36.

On the next screen, choose your desired username and
password for your user. In this example, we will choose the username,
"upload" and the password "upload". After you do this, click next.

Step 37.

Choose the home directory for your upload user.

Click on the little folder picture with the magnifying
glass on it, which is located to the right of the box which says,
"home".

Step 38.

You should now see the "Select home directory"
screen. Here you choose the home directory for your upload user.
Double click on the drive letter that you want the upload home directory to be in.

Step 39.

On the next screen, or wherever you want the upload
home directory to be in, highlight your choice and then click on the
"open" button. In this example, we will be using "c:\upload".

Step 40.

The next screen confirms your choice for the home directory
of the upload user. Click on "Finish", to create the account
for the upload user.

Step 41.

When you create a new user, you need to give that user
access rights. To do this, first, from this screen highlight,
"access rights", and "Virtual path".
The correct permissions for an upload account are,
"Upload", "Append", "List files", "List folders", "Make", and "Subdirs".

After choosing the permissions, click ok.

("Access rights" are the same as permissions.)

Step 42.

The process for creating a download account are the same
as for an upload account, the only differences are the permissions.

The correct permissions for a download account are,
"Download", "Append", "List files", "List folders", and "Subdirs".

After choosing the permissions, click ok.
